This document is the generic specification on gauges for rolling stock and infrastructure in the railway sector. It deals in particular with aspects of interfaces between rolling stock and infrastructure. There are normative connections to: EN 14067, EN 14363, the other parts of EN 15273, EN 15313, EN 50367, EN 50119; there are other essential normative connections to UIC Leaflets, especially of the UIC 505 series. The document is the first one of a series which consists of three standards and forms the European Standard on rolling stock construction gauge and gauges: 1. This first part deals with general issues, approaches which affect the infrastructure and the rolling stock, reference lines and the associated rules; 2. The second part contains rules for the calculation of the loading gauge of the rolling stock depending on the rolling stock characteristics, the chosen profile and the associated calculation methods; 3. The third part contains calculation rules for the infrastructure dimensions which are necessary for operating railway vehicles with certain profiles, including the consideration of constraint points. In this part it is assumed that regarding the gauge a clear agreement between operators of infrastructure and rolling stock has been reached. On the one hand the standard aims at defining a gauge, which shall be cleared und kept clear for the passage of the rolling stock, and on the other hand at defining the rules for the calculation or recalculation of the loading gauge of the rolling stock regarding unrestricted use of these vehicles in one or several networks. This European Standard is applicable to all authorities involved in railway operation and to other track railway systems (for instance trams, metros, and so on), but not to rail-guided buses and similar systems. It allows vehicles and infrastructures to be dimensioned and their compliance to be checked relative to the gauging rules. The standard contains: - a catalogue of European gauges. Some are necessary to ensure interoperability as others are intended for more specific applications. The standard does not exclude the application of other gauges which are not listed in the catalogue. - various calculation methods for infrastructure and rolling stock; - various influencing parameters which shall be taken into account when determining gauges. - assignment of the various influencing parameters to infrastructure and vehicle. In this process the infrastructure operator is responsible for: 1) keeping the gauge clear; 2) the maintenance; 3) the monitoring of the infrastructure. The operator of the rolling stock is responsible for: 1) that the respective gauge of the vehicles used meets the requirements; 2) the consistency of this compliance over the entire operating time.
