Overview

This document is part of the series "Railway applications - Gauges" which consists of the following parts: Part 1: General - Common rules for infrastructure and rolling stock. Part 2: Rolling stock gauge. Part 3: Structure gauges. This series is the generic standard on gauges for rolling stock and infrastructure in the railway sector and deals in particular with aspects of interfaces between rolling stock and infrastructure. The document is the first of a series of three standards forming the European Standard on rolling stock gauges and structure gauges. This first part contains general issues, approaches shared by the infrastructure and the rolling stock. On the one hand, the standard aims at defining a gauge which shall be cleared und kept clear for the passage of the rolling stock, and on the other hand, at defining the rules for the calculation or recalculation of the loading gauge of the rolling stock regarding unrestricted use of these vehicles in one or several networks. The second part of this standard series gives rules for dimensioning the vehicles as a function of their characteristics for the relevant gauge and for the related calculation method, whereas the third part gives the rules for dimensioning the infrastructure in order to allow vehicles built according to the relevant gauge and taking account of the specific constraints to operate within it. This document also regulates the distribution of responsibilities between the operators of infrastructure and rolling stock. It contains a catalogue of various applicable European rolling stock gauges. Some are necessary to ensure interoperability as others are intended for more specific applications. The standard is applicable to all authorities involved in railway operation and to other track railway systems (for instance, trams, metros, etcetera), but not to rail-guided buses and similar systems. It allows vehicles and infrastructures to be dimensioned and their compliance to be checked relative to the gauging rules. This European Standard applies to new and convertible vehicles and inspection of vehicles and railway systems which are already in service. Normative references exist to the series of standards EN 14067, EN 14363, the other parts of the series of standards EN 15273, EN 15313, EN 50367 and EN 50119; there are other essential normative connections to UIC Leaflets, especially of the UIC 505 series. This document is intended to replace the existing regulations in this area, in particular UIC leaflets of the series 505 and 506 and to define a common standard.
