This document is the generic standard for rules and definitions of gauge in the railroad sector and deals with aspects of the interfaces between rolling stock and infrastructure as part of the EN 15273 series of standards. This European Standard is part of the series "Railway applications - Gauges", which consists of the following parts: Part 1: General - Common rules for Rolling Stock and infrastructure. Part 2: Rolling stock gauge. Part 3: Structure gauges. This document is intended to replace existing regulations in this area, in particular UIC leaflets of the 505 series, and to define a common standard. This first part deals with general topics and approaches that affect both the infrastructure and the rolling stock, reference profiles and their associated rules. In this standard a gauge is presented as a clear agreement between infrastructure and vehicle operators. The aim of this standard is to define the space to be cleared and maintained to allow the running of rolling stock, and the rules for calculation and verification intended for sizing the rolling stock to run on one or several infrastructures without interference risk. This standard includes a catalogue of various railway gauges implemented in Europe, some of which are required to ensure the interoperability, while others are related to more specific applications. This European Standard is applicable to all entities involved in railroad operations. It can also be applied to other rail systems (such as trams, metros), but not to track-bound vehicles and similar systems. It allows rolling stock and infrastructures to be dimensioned and their compliance to be checked relative to applicable gauging rules. This European Standard applies to new designs, to modifications and to the checking of vehicles and infrastructures already in use. This document EN 15273-1 covers: the general principles; the various elements and phenomena affecting the determination of gauges; the various calculation methods applicable to the elements shared by the infrastructure and by the rolling stock; the sharing rules for elements taken into account in calculations specific to the infrastructure and to the rolling stock; a catalogue of European gauges. Normative references exist to the EN 14067, EN 14363, EN 15313, EN 50119, EN 50367 series of standards and the other parts of the EN 15273 series of standards; there are significant references to UIC leaflets, in particular the UIC 505 series. Compared to the previous standard, changes have been made to correct significant errors and inaccuracies, particularly with regard to figures, formulas and tables.
This document replaces DIN EN 15273-1:2014-06 .
