Noise emission of vehicles is characterized by the surface texture and sound absorption characteristics, amongst others. In addition, the skid resistance properties of the surface and its mechanical impedance may influence measured noise levels. In order to minimize the variation in rolling sound emission and vehicle sound emission measurements made at different testing locations it is, therefore, necessary to describe exactly the relevant surface properties and specify carefully the properties of the materials, design and construction of the test surface. DIN ISO 10844 specifies the essential characteristics of a test surface intended to be used for measuring vehicle and tyre/road noise emissions. The standard is a revised version of ISO 10844:1994, including more restrictive specifications of the surface and recommendations for the test track construction process and maintenance. The principal objective is to provide a revised specification of the surface which improves the reproducibility of measurement. Test tracks conforming to the requirements of DIN ISO 10744 are compatible with ISO 10844:1994. In addition, the variability of properties is reduced. The basic properties of the surface remain unchanged. It is important that the test provides a high degree of reproducibility between different test sites and that the surface design should not only minimize the inter-site variation of tyre/road noise, but should also ensure that the propagation of noise is unaffected by the surface used. Furthermore, DIN ISO 10844 recommends a non-destructive test method for periodical checking of the surface characteristics. The International Standard ISO 10844:2011 has been prepared by Working Group WG 42 "Measurement of noise emission (external) from road vehicles" with German collaboration. WG 42 is a joint group of Technical Committee ISO/TC 22 "Road vehicles" and ISO/TC 43/SC 1 "Noise", the secretariat of which is held by DS (Denmark). Regarding the German collaboration, the responsible committee is Subcommittee NA 001-01-05-03 UA "Straßenfahrzeuge - Kenngrößen" ("Road vehicles - Parameters") at Working Committee NA 001-01-05 AA "Geräuschemissionsmessungen an Fahrzeugen einschließlich Messungen im Fahrgastraum und am Arbeitsplatz" ("Measurement of noise emission from road vehicles including measurements in passenger accommodations and workplaces").
