The standard specifies requirements for pipeline systems for gases for pharmaceutical applications, for medical device gases, for gases for operating surgical tools and for vacuum. Requirements are specified for the design, installation, function, performance, testing, commissioning and documentation of pipeline systems used in healthcare facilities. This includes requirements for supply systems, pipeline distributions systems, control, monitoring and alarm systems, and non-interchangeability between components of different gas or vacuum systems. Compared to DIN EN ISO 7396-1 from August 2010, the standard has been completely revised by integrating supply systems with oxygen concentrators for use with pipeline systems for medical gases according to DIN ISO 10083. Such supply systems produce the type of oxygen designated as oxygen 93. With this type of oxygen the oxygen concentration may vary in the range of 90% to 96%. Amendment A3 from July 2013, which relates to the terminology used in the standard with regard to alarms, has been incorporated. The standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 121/SC 6 "Medical gas supply systems" in cooperation with CEN/TC 215 "Respiratory and anaesthetic equipment", the secretariat of which is held by BSI, United Kingdom. The responsible national committee is Working Committee NA 053-03-01 AA "Zentrale Gasversorgungsanlagen" ("Central gas supply systems") at DIN Standards Committee Rescue Services and Hospital (NARK).
