DIN EN ISO 4254-12:2012-10

This standard contains specifications meeting the essential requirements set out in Annex I of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which apply to rotary disc and drum mowers and flail mowers that are first placed on the market within the European Economic Area (EEA) to facilitate proof of compliance with these requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a harmonized standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (so called presumption of conformity). This part of ISO 4254, where used with ISO 4254-1, specifies the safety requirements and their verification for the design and construction of rotary disc mowers, rotary drum mowers, as used for forage crop harvesting in agriculture only, and flail mowers with a horizontal axis for use in agriculture only, that are mounted, semimounted, trailed or self-propelled. It describes methods for the elimination or reduction of hazards arising from the intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of these machines by one person (the operator) in the course of normal operation and service. In addition, it specifies the type of information on safe working practices to be provided by the manufacturer. This standard contains the German version of EN ISO 4254-12:2012-06 which has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 23 "Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 144 "Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry" at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN 745:2010-01 as follows: a) requirements related to the thrown object test have been replaced by the reference to ISO 17101; b) requirements related to the protective skirts test have been replaced by the reference to ISO 17103; c) requirements related to the protection against inadvertent contact with the cutting elements have been rendered more precise; d) requirements for conditioners (as an attachment or an integral part) have been rendered more precise and extended; e) requirements for the overrunning clutch or freewheel device and the carrier frame have been supplemented. The national interests during the preparation of this standard were represented by Working Committee NA 060-16-04 "Erntemaschinen" ("Harvesting equipment"), Technical Section "Agricultural engineering" of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of rotary disc and drum mowers and flail mowers, and of the employers' liability insurance association contributed to the preparation.
