Overview

In order to assure customer satisfaction, aerospace industry organizations must produce, and continually improve, safe, reliable products that meet or exceed customer and regulatory authority requirements. The globalization of the aerospace industry, and the resulting diversity of regional/national requirements and expectations, has complicated this objective. End-product organizations face the challenge of assuring the quality of, and integrating, products purchased from suppliers throughout the world and at all levels of the supply chain. Aerospace suppliers and the processing industry face the challenge of delivering products to multiple customers having varying quality expectations and requirements. DIN EN 9131 standardizes requirements for the definition of data describing nonconformances as well as for the documentation in the field of the aerospace industry. The specification of universal requirements will result in improved quality and safety, and decreased costs, due to the elimination or reduction of organization-specific requirements and the resultant variations in the provisions. This standard has been prepared to provide for the uniform submittal of nonconformance information for notification and/or approval by any third party (for example, customers or authorities) when contractually required. It is applicable as a guideline within the aviation, space, and defence industries, for use at all levels of the supply and manufacturing chain. This standard can be applied as a stand-alone requirement or in conjunction with the AS/EN/JISQ standard series (that is 9100, 9110, and 9120). The process of exchanging, coordinating and approving nonconformance data via waiver/concession or for product quality escape strongly depends on the contractual relationships and the variance of the agreements among all parties concerned. The information provided by this standard forms the architecture for submitting and managing data that allow for concise and accurate communication using various methods. The main objective of this standard is to provide the definition of a data set that can be integrated into any form of communication (for example, electronic data interchange, submission of conventional paper forms). The standard EN 9131:2009 has been prepared by the IAQG and published for the European sector of the IAQG by the department of quality of ASD-STAN. The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 131-05-01 AA "Grundlagen und Managementverfahren" ("Basic principles and management processes") of the Aerospace Standards Committee at DIN.
