This standard contains specifications meeting the essential requirements set out in Annex I of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC which apply to machines that are first placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market, in order to facilitate proof of compliance with these requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a "harmonized" standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive ("presumption of conformity"). This document specifies all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in clause 4 which are relevant to stationary and displaceable hand fed single spindle vertical moulding machines (with or without demountable power feed unit), herein after referred to as "machines", designed to cut solid wood, chip board, fibreboard, plywood and also these materials if they are covered with plastic laminate or edgings when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. Machines which are designed to work wood based materials may also be used for working hardened plastic materials with similar physical characteristics as wood. For the definition of stationary and displaceable machine see 3.2.17 and 3.2.18. This document does not apply to: machines equipped with outboard bearings; machines equipped with powered movements of front extension table and/or tenoning sliding table; hand held woodworking machines or any adaptation permitting their use in a different mode, that is, bench mounting; Hand-held motor-operated electric tools are dealt with in EN 60745-1:2003 together with EN 60745-2-17:2003. machines set up on a bench or a table similar to a bench, which are intended to carry out work in a stationary position, capable of being lifted by one person by hand. The bench can also be an integrated part of the machine if it consists of hinged legs which can be extended down. Transportable motor-operated electric tools are dealt with in EN 61029-1:2000 together with EN 61029-2-8:2003. This document is not applicable to hand fed single spindle vertical moulding machines which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. Machines covered by this document are listed under 7 of Annex IV of the Machinery Directive. This standard contains the German version of EN 848-1:2012 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 142 "Woodworking machines - Safety" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN 848-1:2010-04 as follows: a) clause 1, the Scope has been extended to include machines used for working hardened plastic materials with similar physical characteristics as wood; b) clause 2, Normative references, has been updated; c) in 5.2, Controls, the design requirements for control circuits in certain categories have been replaced by specifications for performance levels; d) the title of the former 5.2.1.2, Use of well-tried components and protective devices, has been replaced with "Use of protective devices" and 5.2.1.2.1, Well-tried components, and 5.2.1.3, Use of electronic components, have been deleted; e) 5.2.7, Speed changing, has been revised; f) 5.2.8, Adjustments control, has been completely revised; g) 5.3.4, Braking, has been completely revised; h) 5.3.7, Prevention of access to moving parts, has been completely revised; i) a description of the rigidity test has been added in normative Annex D for guards' materials, unless they are in accordance with the requirements of polycarbonate guards in 5.3.7.3, Characteristics of guards; j) 5.4.3, Emission of chips and dust, has been revised to include further requirements; k) the former informative Annex D, Use of well-tried components, has been deleted; l) informative Annex ZA on the relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 98/37/EC has been deleted; m) the former Annex ZB on the relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 2006/42/EC is now informative Annex ZA; n) the Bibliography has been updated. The national interests during the preparation were represented by Committee NA 060-06-01 AA "Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen - Sicherheit" ("Woodworking machines - Safety") at Technical Section "Woodworking machines" at the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of single spindle vertical moulding machines, and of the employers' liability insurance associations contributed to this standard.
