Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements of Annex I of the EC Directive 95/16/EC for lifts which were placed on the market in the EEA for the first time, in order to facilitate the verification of the conformity with these requirements. Once it is cited in the Official Journal of the European Communities, it is deemed a harmonised standard, and thus a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive covered by this standard (so called presumption of conformity). This standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events of permanently installed new electric lifts, with traction, drum or positive drive, serving defined landing levels and having a car designed for the transportation of persons or persons and goods, suspended by ropes or chains and moving between guide rails inclined not more than 15° to the vertical. This standard does not cover: - installation of electric lifts in existing buildings to the extent that space does not permit, - important modifications to a lift installed before this standard is brought into application, - lifting appliances, such as paternosters, mine lifts, theatrical lifts, appliances with automatic caging, skips, lifts and hoists for building and public works sites, ship's hoists, platforms for exploration or drilling at sea, construction and maintenance appliances, - transport, installation, repairs and dismantling of lifts, - lifts with rated speeds ≤ 0,15 m/s. With respect to DIN EN 81-1:2000-05 the following significant changes have been made: - lifts with rated speeds ≤ 0,15 m/s have been excluded; - a new clause on machinery and pulley spaces has been incorporated; - a clause on the protection against unintended car movements has been added; - subclause 12.5 (Emergency operation) has been changed; - a new subclause 12.12 (Normal stopping of the car at landings and levelling accuracy) has been added; - programmable electronic systems have been added; - the machinery has been adapted for lifts without a machine room; - the machine and pulley rooms and the lift well for lifts without a machine room have been adapted. This standard contains the German version of EN 81-1:1998+A3:2009 which has been prepared by Technical Committee 10 "Lifts, escalators and moving walks" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). During the preparation of the standard, the national interests were represented by Working Committee NA 060-33-01 AA "Aufzüge" ("Lifts") of Fachbereich Aufzüge und Fahrtreppen (Technical section lifts and escalators) of Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM). Manufacturers' representatives and users of hydraulic lifts and professional and trade associations have been involved in the preparation of the standard.
