This standard, which is applicable for lead-acid starter batteries in motor vehicles, has been supplemented in its new edition by specifications addressing capacity labelling. The modifications that have been introduced are based on Commission Regulation (EU) No 1103/2010 of 29 November 2010 on the introduction of rules pursuant to Directive 2006/66/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards capacity labelling of secondary (rechargeable) device batteries and accumulators as well as automotive batteries and accumulators (OJ L 313, 30.11.2010, pages 3-7). This Regulation is implemented through supplementation of the previous standard DIN EN 50342-1:2006 in view of precise definitions of the values of accuracy for capacity and cold cranking. For this purpose, the definition of the labelled capacity is now clearly identified, and a method of sampling the batteries as well as the degree of compliance of the requirements has been defined more precisely. Additionally, more precise phrasing for the definition of the needed labels have been introduced. The draft of the amendment has been prepared by the CLC/TC 21X in cooperation with ZVEI/EUROBAT based on different discussions within these organisations. The responsible committee is K 371 "Akkumulatoren" ("Accumulators") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
