The new edition of this European Standard contains general requirements for several types and designs of starter batteries for use in passenger cars as well as in commercial and industrial vehicles. This includes certain basic characteristics, relevant test methods and required results. This concerns lead-acid batteries with a nominal voltage of 12 V, which are primarily used as a source of energy for starting internal combustion engines, for lighting and also for the additional equipment of vehicles with internal combustion engines. Batteries with a nominal voltage of 6 V are also included in this standard. The European standard prepared at CENELEC is the basis for other standards in the DIN EN 50342 series and deviates in places from the corresponding IEC 60095 series with the same field of application. The responsible committee is K 371 "Akkumulatoren" ("Accumulators") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
