This standard specifies the terms and definitions of the remote sensing of the Earth, including objects present on it, with imaging digital sensor systems from locations on the Earth, from aircraft (especially airplanes) or satellites. It is intended for harmonization of the base concepts and designations. Remote sensing is used for detection and observation of the Earth's surface in the broader sense, in particular for mapping and monitoring of the geosphere and biosphere, for data collection in the geo-information field, preparation of planning documents and for observation of natural and anthropogenic changes in ecosystems. This also includes applications in surveying and mapping, and, moreover, in a broad range of other special fields such as regional development and planning, forestry, civil engineering, architecture, monument protection and archaeology, industry measurements, accident recording and criminology, medicine and others. The statements also apply analogously for the exploration of extra-terrestrial bodies. Some remote sensing techniques have been developed in oceanography and meteorology. The related terms and definitions are not covered by this standard. This standard refers to the detection and interpretation of electromagnetic radiation and not on magnetic and gravity fields. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 005-03-02 AA "Photogrammetrie und Fernerkundung" ("Photogrammetry and remote sensing") at DIN.
