Overview

The aim of this Supplement is to provide persons dealing with the use of portable electrical equipment with information for the construction and function of portable residual current devices (PRCD) and operating instructions for their use and application. The key topics are as follows: - survey of the different types of PRCDs, their styles and characteristics and the related extent of protection to be reached, - describe the increase of protection level by PRCD in the event of undetected faults or nonexistent additional protection within the installation for the electrical equipment operated, - support fault-free operation by correct selection of the PRCD. These operating instructions deal with portable residual current devices for household and similar use (PRCDs) with a rated voltage not exceeding AC 250 V single phase and AC 250 V/440 V three phase and a rated current not exceeding 16 A (single phase) und 32 A (three phase). They provide users (for example, end users, decision makers, electrically skilled persons, electricians, electrical planners) with additional information about the selection and use of PRCDs for the purpose of raising the protection level. The PRCDs are intended for switching off the mains voltage in the event of a fault, but not for disconnection. Disconnection can be provided by the plug. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 541.3 "Fehlerstrom-Schutzeinrichtungen" ("Residual current devices") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
