This document is published with three columns; the first column contains ISO 24510 in the English language, the second column contains a translation which has not been authorized by DIN and the third column contains a comment by the responsible committee NA 119-06-04 AA in collaboration with the Austrian experts of ISO/TC 224 "Service activities relating to drinking water supply systems and wastewater systems - Quality criteria of the service and performance indicators". This way it is ensured that on the national level a document is available containing the usual terms used in the respective countries. Furthermore, it is aimed at demonstrating which national regulations shall be observed. The entire document is published as DIN SPEC 1255. The new standard series (ISO 24510, ISO 24511, ISO 24512) for service activities relating to drinking water supply systems and wastewater systems which has been prepared by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is intended for the establishment of efficient water management. The emphases of the standards are guidelines on the structure, execution and assessment of management of the provision of the basic necessity water. With the standards ISO supports the objective of the World Health Organization to continuously improve public health by good drinking water quality and proper wastewater treatment. It is a fact that every year millions of people in emerging and developing countries still die from illnesses due to lack of access to clean drinking water and insufficient wastewater treatment. Information shall be pointed out that binding framework conditions and responsibilities for drinking water and wastewater services should be specified in these countries. The ISO service standards on water/wastewater provide assistance regarding the specifications of framework conditions and responsibilities for the information about tasks of provision and disposal, definition and description of the management tasks; implementation and assessment of the management tasks and development or facilitation of the dialogue with the interested parties of drinking water and wastewater services on an international level. These framework conditions are an important basis to achieve the objectives of the United Nations World Summit in Johannesburg. The German Federal Government and the German water management unanimously support the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development of 2002-09-04 and the agreed international objectives. ISO 24510 is part of a set of standards on water services. This series currently consists of the following standards: ISO 24510, "Activities relating to drinking water and wastewater services - Guidelines for the assessment and for the improvement of the service to users" ISO 24511, "Activities relating to drinking water and wastewater services - Guidelines for the management of wastewater utilities and for the assessment of wastewater services" ISO 24512, "Activities relating to drinking water and wastewater services - Guidelines for the management of drinking water utilities and for the assessment of drinking water services" ISO 24510 applies for the parts of drinking water and wastewater services which are of interest to users. It also contains guidelines on how the needs and expectations of the users shall be identified and how their fulfilment can be assessed. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 119-06-04 AA "Dienstleistungen im Bereich der Trinkwasserversorgung und Abwasserentsorgung (ISO/TC 224)" ("Service activities relating to drinking water supply systems and wastewater systems (ISO/TC 224)") at DIN.
