Overview

This supplement complements contains additional information to DIN EN 62305-3 (VDE 0185-305-3). This supplement takes into account special structures for which there are no international normative guidelines with respect to lightning protection aspects. As building technology and building use has further developed in the past years, modern structures such as biogas installations and silos are taken into account along with hospitals, sports facilities, installations with potentially explosive atmospheres, chimneys, telecommunications towers, bridges, cranes, high-bay warehouses, church towers, pipeline bridges and installations for water processing. Lightning protection systems for areas exposed to fire hazard are designed such that during a lightning strike no melting or spraying effect takes place, except for at the site of the impact. Therefore, all connections shall be manufactured in a particularly careful manner; joints shall be limited to the absolutely necessary minimum. A lightning protection system designed for protection class III corresponds with the normal requirements for buildings with areas at risk of fire. In particular individual cases, the necessity of additional measures in accordance with DIN EN 62305-2 (VDE 0185-305-2) shall be checked. When a lightning protection system corresponding with protection class II is designed, this corresponds with the normal requirements for potentially explosive atmospheres. Deviations can occur in justified individual cases or under special conditions, such as extreme environmental influences, climactic conditions or legal guidelines. Requirements for a lightning protection system of protection class II are based on the designs of lightning protection systems in potentially explosive atmospheres proven in practice. When a risk analysis shows that an installation is particularly susceptible to lightning and other overvoltages, precautions shall be taken to avoid these potential hazards. Additional supplementary information for application of DIN EN 62305-3 (VDE 0185-305-3) is contained in the following supplements: - Supplement 1: Additional information for the application of DIN EN 62305-3 (VDE 0185-305-3) - Supplement 3: Additional information for the testing and maintenance of lightning protection systems - Supplement 4: Use of metallic roofs in lightning protection systems - Supplement 5: Lightning and overvoltage protection for photovoltaic power supply systems The responsible committee is K 251 "Blitzschutzanlagen und Blitzschutzbauteile" ("Lightning protection systems and lightning protection components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
