This Supplement provides guidance on the method of testing switchgear and controlgear assemblies under the conditions of arcing in air due to an internal fault. The purpose of this test is to assess the ability of a switchgear assembly to limit the risk of personal injury, damage to the switchgear assemblies and their suitability for continued operation as a result of an internal arcing fault. The test procedure specified in this Supplement applies only to: - enclosed, floor-standing or wall-mounted low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies according to IEC 61439-2 (power switchgear and controlgear assemblies). It may be used as a reference for arcing tests on other products, but adaptations of the test procedures and acceptance criteria may be required while taking the particularities of other switchgear and controlgear assemblies or products into consideration; - switchgear and controlgear assemblies where the doors and covers are closed and properly secured. If tests under different or more stringent conditions have been agreed between the user and the manufacturer, then this Supplement may be used as a guide. The test procedure specified in this Technical Report takes into account: - the effects of internal overpressure acting on covers, doors, etcetera; - the thermal effects of the arc or its bases on enclosures and of hot gases and glowing particles emitted.
