Overview

This new European Technical Specification which has been prepared by CEN/TC 331/WG 2, describes the functional specification for the structure or implementation of a system for postal registered electronic mail (hereinafter called PReM system) by a postal operator which can be offered to the customers of the postal operator as part of the Secured electronic postal services (SePS). PReM is the electronic version of the traditional postal service in the form of registered mail. Here, modern encryption techniques are used to provide a strong role authentication and the protection of the confidentiality and integrity of the message and to add integrity attributes to verifications of events and processes. The aim of PReM is therefore to expand the classical email service by providing a confidential electronic end-to-end communication service which includes the verification of the collection and delivery between authenticated parties. The service is embedded in the secured and confidential exchange of electronic mails, as every step of the process is recorded for later tracking and every unit is authenticated.
