Since hot cells have a shielding between the operating staff and the radioactive substances, a certain structure and basic equipment which are largely independent of the intended use are necessary for carrying out the operation. The main characteristics and properties of remotely operated hot cells are: - facilities protecting the operating staff, such as shielding against ionizing radiation that encloses on all sides, forced ventilation, additional enclosing of the work area for retention of contaminations and others, if necessary. - manipulators that reach through shielding walls or that are in the hot cells and shielding windows in the shielding walls jointly allowing for remote-controlled handling of objects in the hot cells. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 062-07-62 AA "Strahlenschutzeinrichtungen" ("Radiation protection") at DIN.
