For the application and use of steel wires for lifting and lashing so-called thimbles are necessary. Due to DIN 3090:1989-08 "Steel thimbles general requirements for steel wire ropes" which was withdrawn in 2002-05, it became necessary due to special requirements to prepare a VG standard for application in shipbuilding and maritime navigation. Thimbles for steel wire ropes according to this standard shall have a specific minimum quality. Other advantages are exchangeability, a reinforced thimble back and a uniform exterior appearance. VG 85275 documents the types, dimensions, designations and material requirements (stainless steel) for thimbles Type N for steel wire ropes and Type BF for fibre ropes. VG 85275 contains construction details necessary to ensure the thimbles are largely exchangeable and have a minimum level of quality. For the thimbles for steel wire ropes (N), Type N from the withdrawn standard DIN 3090:2002-05 has been included, because these heavy thimbles with reinforced thimble back have been proven effective in shipbuilding. For the construction of thimbles for fibre ropes, Type BF according to DIN 6899:1988-01 has been included. Via the marking of the thimbles for fibre ropes, the nominal sizes, the manufacturer's logo and the traceability code are specified, amongst others. The manufacturer shall provide a manufacturer's declaration, if requested. This VG standard has been prepared by NA 132-01-05 AA "Heben, Schleppen, Ankern" ("Heaving, towing, anchoring").
This document replaces DIN 3090:1989-08 , DIN 6899:1988-01 .
