Overview

This standard revises and replaces the previous standard DIN VDE 0228-1 (VDE 0228-1):1987-12 and adapts its specifications to the current state of the art. In this process the previous VDE classification VDE 0228 has also been changed to VDE 0845 in the framework of the re-structuring and compilation of the DIN/VDE body of standards with respect to topics of protection against overvoltage and influence of telecommunication systems. This standard contains specifications concerning the protection of telecommunications systems and installations (protection of persons and of objects) against influences caused by common mode (longitudinal) and differential mode (transverse) voltages and/or currents induced by electric power supply and traction systems via inductive, capacitive or conductive coupling. The frequency range for the phenomena dealt with in this standard is 0 Hz to 9 kHz. The basic frequencies for the a.c. high voltage systems taken into consideration is 50 Hz for energy supply installations and 16,7 Hz and 50 Hz for traction supply installations. D.c. high voltage systems are also dealt with in this standard. This standard is not applicable for high voltage systems with r.m.s values for operating voltages below 1 000 V. The general information, the relevant measurement and calculation methods and the limits that are induced in a telecommunications system by one or more power lines are described or specified, respectively, in this standard. Moreover, measures to correct against influences are described. Standardized values for earth resistance and reduction factors are provided in annexes in this standard. The standard also takes into consideration specifications from the previous draft for a European Standard EN 50351. The European standardization project was not brought to completion and therefore the European work has been discontinued. The responsible committee is UK 767.6 "Schutz von Einrichtungen der Informationstechnik gegen Überspannungen und niederfrequente Felder" ("Protection of equipment for information technology against overvoltage and low-frequency fields") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
