Overview

This part of the standards of the VDE 0100 (VDE 0100) series applies to electrical installations and contains measures for the protection of persons, livestock and property - against thermal effects, combustion or degradation of materials, and risk of burns caused by electrical equipment, - flames in case of a fire hazard being propagated from electrical installations to other fire compartments segregated by barriers which are in the vicinity, and - the impairment of the safe functioning of electrical equipment including safety services. This standard summarizes the previous separately published requirements from - DIN VDE 0100-420 (VDE 0100-420):1991-11 "Erection of power installations with nominal voltages up to 1 000 V; protective measures; protection against thermal effects" and - DIN VDE 0100-482 (VDE 0100-482):2003-06 "Erection of low-voltage installations; Part 4: Protection for safety; Chapter 48: Choice of protective measures as a function of external influences; Section 482: Protection against fire where particular risks or danger exist" into one standard. The following significant modifications have been made with respect to DIN VDE 0100-420 (VDE 0100-420):1991-11 and DIN VDE 0100-482 (VDE 0100-482):2003-06: a) limitation to necessary equipment; b) clause "Protection against overheating" now also includes hot water or steam generators; c) separation of the general fire protection requirements for particular risks or dangers at company centres at risk of fire; d) separation of the general fire protection requirements for particular risks or dangers for rooms or sites with flammable building materials; e) inclusion of requirements for emergency and escape routes; f) inclusion of requirements for prevention of spread of fires in buildings; g) inclusion of requirements for selection and erection of electrical installations in rooms or at sites where irreplaceable goods are endangered. The responsible committee is UK 221.2 "Schutz gegen thermische Auswirkungen/Sachschutz" ("Protection against thermal effects/protection of goods") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
