Overview

The standard DIN ISO 606 specifies the characteristics of short-pitch precision roller and bush chains with associated sprockets suitable for the mechanical transmission of power and allied applications. It covers dimensions, tolerances, length measurements, preloading, minimum tensile strengths and minimum dynamic strengths. The translation of ISO 606 and as a result the adoption into the German body of standards with the withdrawal of the corresponding German standards has been decided by Working Committee NA 060-34-35 AA "Stahlgelenkketten" ("Steel link chains") of Technical Section Antriebstechnik (Power transmission engineering) of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee. The work involved in the national adoption of the International Standard is a one-time affair, which saves considerable time and money as compared with the development of an additional national standard on the same type of chain. The International Standard ISO 606 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 100 "Chains and chain wheels for power transmission and conveyors". Edition DIN ISO 606 replaces DIN 8187-1 to -3, DIN 8188-1 to -3, DIN 8154 and DIN 8196-1. This standard differs from DIN 8154:1999-09, DIN 8187-1:1996-03, DIN 8187-1 Corrigendum 1:2006-11, DIN 8187-2:1998-08, DIN 8187-3:1998-08, DIN 8188-1:1996-03, DIN 8188-2:1998-08, DIN 8188-3:1998-08 and DIN 8196-1:1987-03 as follows: a) Some dimensions have been slightly modified to ensure geometrical interchangeability. b) Chains 03 and 04 previously covered in DIN 8187 have been dropped. c) The ANSI heavy series of chains has been included in the standard. d) Marking of the chains is specified in the standard. e) The tensile strength test has been rendered more precise. f) Dynamic testing of the chain shall be in accordance with ISO 15654. The relevant minimum requirements have been specified. g) Values of bearing area and mass per metre are no longer included. h) The minimum tensile strength of the chains has been reduced. i) The dimension indicating the distance between outer plates has been modified. j) The hole diameters of attachment plates have been modified. k) Attachment plates for additional chain sizes have been included. l) The extended bearing pin "E2" is now referred to as "Type X". Bearing pins E3, Z2 and Z3 have been dropped. For "A" series chains "Type Y" has been included. m) Specifications regarding materials are no longer included. The national interests during the preparation of the standard are represented by Committee NA 060-34-35 AA "Stahlgelenkketten" ("Steel link chains") of Technical section "Antriebstechnik" ("Power transmission engineering") of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of the manufacturers and users of steel link chains are involved in the preparation of the standard.
