The measurement method defined in the standard is used to quantitatively assess the noise emitted by road vehicles in the vicinity of the exhaust (near-field measurement method). The measured value is the maximum A-weighted sound pressure level rounded up to the nearest decibel. The method allows both the testing of vehicles in traffic and the determination of changes in exhaust noise. Such changes may result from wear or improper adjustment, without the damage being visible during a visual inspection, or from partial or complete dismantling of exhaust silencers. Such changes can be determined by comparing the measured values with reference measured values that were determined using the same measurement procedure and under similar measurement conditions, for example during the type approval of the vehicle. The standard contains requirements for the test site as well as detailed specifications for the microphone setup and the operating conditions of the vehicle (the main parameter is the engine speed at idling). In addition, the standard specifies an estimation of the measurement uncertainty of the result according to the Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM). Two informative annexes explain the technical background and provide detailed considerations of the factors influencing measurement uncertainty. This standard includes the German translation of the International Standard ISO 5130:2007 as well as the Amendment ISO 5130:2007/Amd.1:2012, which essentially contains a more precise definition of the term "dense asphalt" and a corrected pictorial representation of the reference point on the exhaust pipe. These documents have been prepared at WG 42 "Joint Working Group ISO/TC 43/SC 1 - ISO/TC 22 WG: Measurement of (exterior) noise emission of road vehicles" of ISO/TC 43/SC 1 "Noise". Working Committee NA 001-01-05 AA "Geräuschemissionsmessungen an Fahrzeugen einschließlich Messungen im Fahrgastraum und am Arbeitsplatz" ("Measurement of sound exposition on road vehicles, including measurements inside the passenger compartment and at the workplace") at DIN/VDI Standards Committee Acoustics, Noise Control and Vibration Engineering (NALS) is responsible for the German collaboration.
