Overview

This International Standard specifies criteria for designing, implementing and maintaining terminology management systems (TMSs). This International Standard provides information about the rationale for using a TMS, types of users and users' needs, steps in designing and implementing a TMS, as well as the tasks of organizing and managing a terminological data collection (TDC). It also provides guidelines for selecting and using data categories for managing terminology in various environments. This International Standard is intended for terminologists, software developers and others who are involved in the process of developing or acquiring a TMS. A wide range of terminology management systems (TMS) are available for collecting, managing, and storing terminological data. These use different types of database management systems - from computer applications for individual users to client-server systems or web-based software for large companies and government agencies. Terminological data collections are based on different data models and consist of different compilations of data categories (data category selection). In order to ensure the interoperability of the systems and to avoid additional work, it is important to develop standards and guidelines that regulate the development and use of terminological data collections as well as the sharing and exchange of data. To facilitate the exchange of terminological data and to provide an integrated approach to the analysis of existing terminological data collections and the development of new systems, ISO/TC 37 has published the following standards to date: ISO 704, ISO 12620, ISO 16642. Some knowledge of the aforementioned documents is beneficial for reading this International Standard. DIN 2330 and DIN 2342 are also recommended for German speaking users. This International Standard provides guidelines for the selection of relevant data categories, the development and implementation of a data model and a TMS user interface, taking the intended user groups into account. The guidelines described in this document are indispensable for the successful development of a TMS and help to avoid cost-intensive errors as well as to select the suitable TMS for a concrete intended use.
