This standard gives guidance for the selection and use of water safety signs as specified in ISO 20712-1 and beach safety flags as specified in (DIN) ISO 20712-2, in aquatic environments. It provides guidance on their location, mounting positions, lighting and maintenance and on the design and location of multiple signs. "Aquatic environments" are all areas and facilities near or with water in which an operator or in other respects responsible person is responsible for the safety of the users. This includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, natural pools, bathing and beach areas. This standard does not apply to traffic signs for use on the public highway or maritime signalling. It is also not applicable to flags for use on firing ranges or to flags used to indicate water quality; it does not cover means of escape signs and their illumination which may be present. The intention of this standard is to ensure a uniformity of application of water safety signs and beach safety flags which leads to increased familiarity, and therefore improved safety, for the users including visitors and for the general public. The use of water safety signs and beach safety flags does not replace the need for proper working methods, instructions and accident prevention measures and training and for the provision of lifeguards. ISO 20712-3 has been prepared by ISO/TC 145 "Graphical symbols", Subcommittee SC 2 "Safety identification, signs, shapes, symbols and colours" with substantial collaboration of German experts. On the national level, Joint Working Committee NA 095-01-06 GA "Sicherheitskennzeichnung" ("Safety identification") of the Safety Design Principles Standards Committee (NASG) at DIN, the German Institute for Standardization e. V. is responsible for the editing. The ISO 20712 standard series consists of the following parts under the main title "Water safety signs and beach safety flags": - Part 1: Specifications for water safety signs used in workplaces and public areas - Part 2: Specifications for beach safety flags; Colour, shape, meaning and performance - Part 3: Guidance for use
