Overview

Portable X-ray fluorescence analysis equipment equipped with miniature X-ray tubes to generate ionizing radiation represent a new class of industrial equipment. The miniature X-ray tube replaces the miniature radioisotope power sources (for example, 55Fe, 57Co, 109Cd, 241Am and 244Cm) used in portable analysis equipment for the determination of lead content in colours, for analysis of alloys and soil screening for dangerous substances. This standard is applicable to the radiological safety of portable handheld X-ray fluorescence analysis equipment equipped with a miniature X-ray tube as the source of ionizing radiation. The aim of the standard is to specify uniform performance standards for the general radiation, electrical, safety and environmental characteristics for the design and operation of this equipment, and to specify test methods with regard to their radiological safety. The responsible committee is K 967 "Mess-, Steuer- und Regelungstechnik im Zusammenhang mit ionisierender Strahlung" ("Measuring, control and regulatory technology in connection with ionizing radiation") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
