This International Standard has been developed in response to worldwide demand with the aim of ensuring that bicycles manufactured to it are as safe as practically possible. The tests have been designed to ensure the strength and durability of both the individual parts and the bicycle as a whole, setting high quality requirements throughout and demanding that safety considerations be taken into account from the design stage. The scope is limited to safety considerations and explicitly avoids standardization of components. If the bicycle is to be used on public roads, it is subject to national regulations. For the purpose of improving repeatability and reproducibility, and taking into account the applicability to all types and sizes of bicycles and the influence of the operator, testing on a test bench currently reflects the state of the art and is preferred over testing on a test track. If there continues to be no evidence to improve the test method on a test track in the future, this method will be included informatively in the next revision. Users of this International Standard are requested to communicate their experience to ISO/TC 149/SC 1. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 112-06-01 AA "Fahrräder für allgemeine und sportliche Benutzung" ("Cycles for common and athletic use") at the Standards Committee Sports Equipment (NASport) at DIN.
