The International Standard ISO 3581:2003+Cor. 1:2008+Amd. 1:2011 has been prepared by ISO/TC 44 "Welding and allied processes", the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR (France) and has been adopted identically as a European Standard in the framework of the Unique Acceptance Process (UAP). The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 092-00-03 AA "Schweißzusätze (DVS AG W 5)" ("Welding consumables (DVS AG W 5)") at the Welding and allied processes Standards Committee (NAS). This International Standard specifies requirements for classification of covered electrodes, based on the allweld metal chemical composition, the type of electrode covering and other electrode properties, and the allweld metal mechanical properties - in as-welded or heat-treated condition - for manual metal arc welding of stainless and heat-resisting steels. This International Standard is a combined standard providing for classification and utilizes a system based upon classification according to nominal composition, or utilizing a system based upon classification according to alloy type. This International Standard has been prepared using the cohabitation principle in which two property classifications of the same subject are specified, designated as A and B. The property classification corresponding to A mainly reflects the European approach, while classification according to B is mainly based on specifications used around the Pacific Rim.
