Pipeline transport systems, generally called pipelines, serve long-distance transport, in particular of petroleum and natural gas. They ensure the energy supply of world-wide industrial agglomeration areas. Pipeline transport systems are installed "offshore", that is on the seafloor, or "onshore", meaning on the mainland. Pipes for pipeline transport systems are generally manufactured from steel plate or steel strip by welding using a longitudinal or helical seam. Transport (and conveyance) of petroleum and natural gas is an international sector of industry, both on the side of the pipe manufacturer and the side of the pipeline operator. Standard ISO 3183 has been developed in collaboration with ISO and in association with the API (American Petroleum Institute) with the result that now a common Standard ISO 3183/API Spec 5L exists. Due to the fact that this standard has also been adopted for the first time on a European level, a uniform International Standard is now available for this sector. All participants will be able to take advantage of this internationally uniform standard for their internationally active industrial sector representing an economically significant market segment. The committee responsible for this standard is the Iron and Steel Standards Committee (FES), Subcommittee NA 021-00-09-03 UA "Fernleitungsrohre" ("Line pipes") under the co-sponsorship of NA 109-00-02 "Fernleitungssysteme - Spiegelausschuss zu ISO/TC 67/SC 2" ("Pipeline transportation systems - mirror committee for ISO/TC 67/SC 2") at DIN.
