Overview

Zinc oxide/eugenol cements are mainly used for temporary cementation of cast restorations, as material for temporary restorations, for indirect pulp capping or root canal sealer. Zinc oxide/eugenol cements and zinc oxide/non-eugenol cements are offered either as powder and fluid or as 2 pastes, as such also in double cartridges with mixing bases. The texture of the pastes is basically obtained through natural resins (colophony) and paraffin. One of the components consists mainly of zinc oxide to which other zinc compounds, for example, zinc acetate for acceleration the setting time, are added. The fluid or other paste contains eugenol containing preparations according to the designation eugenol (C10H12O2, 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol) and vegetable oils. Eugenol is a phenol derivative, insoluble in water and clove oil consists of 80 % of eugenol. Eugenol can be fully or partly substituted by other chelating agents, for non eugenol cements typically by higher fatty acids, carboxylic acids or even resins with acid groups. This standard applies for non-water-based zinc oxide/eugenol cements suitable for use in restorative dentistry for temporary cementation, for bases and as temporary restorations. This standard also applies for non-eugenol cements containing zinc oxide and aromatic oils suitable for temporary cementation. This International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 106/SC 1/WG 1 "Zinc oxide/eugenol cements" (secretariat: SAA, Australia) together with CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN). The responsible Committee at DIN is Working Committee NA 014-00-01 AA "Füllungswerkstoffe" ("Filling materials") of NADENT.
