For daily oral hygiene it is necessary to clean teeth with toothpaste and toothbrush twice a day. But since up to 40 percent of the tooth surfaces cannot be reached with the toothbrush, cleaning of these surfaces with dental floss is necessary. In the back of the mouth, between the back teeth (molars) where teeth come into contact (contact points), the toothbrush is overchallenged. A small amount of food often gets stuck between the teeth which the bacteria living in the mouth preferably utilize themselves. Tooth decay develops underneath the tartar (plaque). In order to prevent this, dental floss comes into play. Its use can provide for order and cleanliness, even behind the last back tooth. This standard specifies the requirements and test methods for integrated dental floss and handles which are used for cleaning of interdental spaces for oral hygiene, community care, professional care of oral health or during dental treatment. The standard is applicable to integrated dental floss and handles for manual use. It is not applicable to dental floss and handles which contain a continuous supply of dental floss, or dental floss and handles to which the floss is subsequently added. The International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 106/SC 7/WG 6 "Dental flosses" (secretariat: DIN), together with CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN). At DIN, the responsible Working Committee is NA 014-00-19 AA "Mundpflegeprodukte" ("Oral hygiene products") of NADENT.
