This standard applies to agar impression materials and alginate impression materials containing hydrocolloids that are composed in such a way that they bond when used in combination to obtain elastic impressions of the oral tissue system. In this combined system, a relatively small mass of the reversible agar hydrocolloid is syringed onto the tissue to be copied in fine details whereas the non-reversible alginate component provides the additional bulk material needed for a complete impression. This standard specifies the requirements and tests for helping determine whether the elastic aqueous agar and alginate hydrocolloid dental impression materials, as prepared for retail marketing, are of the quality needed for their intended purposes. The International Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 106/SC 2/WG 7 "Impression materials" (secretariat: ANSI, USA) in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN). The responsible committee at DIN is Working Committee NA 014-00-22 AA "Abformmassen" ("Impression materials") at NADENT.
