Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. This document covers all significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events listed in Clause 4 that apply to machines for calibrating and/or sanding panels and/or straight workpieces made of solid wood and materials with physical properties similar to wood, such as plasterboard and gypsum-bonded fiberboard, equipped with a mechanical feed and an abrasive belt or belts located above and/or below the level of the workpiece and working in the direction of the feed of the panels, hereinafter referred to as "machines" when used, adjusted and maintained for their intended purpose under conditions foreseen by the manufacturer, including reasonably foreseeable misuse. Feeding and/or removal can be manual or automatic. Transportation, assembly, disassembly, dismantling and scrapping have also been taken into consideration. The following equipment may be present: * transversal sanding unit; * cleaning brushing unit; * satining roller unit; * disk brushing unit; * texturing brushing roller unit; * texturing brushing belt unit; * cutterblock unit; * texturing band saw unit; * spiked roller unit; * antistatic bars; * conveyor directly controlled by the machine; * additional work piece vacuum clamping device. This standard does not deal with all hazards related to: a) access through in-feed and out-feed openings of machines with a work piece height capacity greater than 550 mm; b) systems for automatic loading and/or unloading of the work piece to/from a single machine, except for transport devices controlled directly by the machine; c) interfacing of the machine with any other machine; d) chemical properties of the dust from gypsum-based products in relation to health. This document does not apply to: 1. machines intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres; 2. machines manufactured before the date of its issue as an International Standard. The national interests during the preparation were represented by Committee NA 060-06-01 AA "Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen - Sicherheit" ("Woodworking machines - Safety") of Technical Section "Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen" ("Woodworking machines") at DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM). Representatives of manufacturers and users of of wide-belt sanding machines for calibrating and sanding and of the employers' liability insurance associations contributed to this standard.
