This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a "harmonized" standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive ("presumption of conformity"). This part of ISO 14122 describes requirements for non-powered fixed ladders which are part of a stationary machine and for the non-powered adjustable parts (for example, foldable, slidable) and movable parts of fixed means of access. "Fixed" means of access are those mounted in such a manner (for example, by screws, nuts, welding) that they can only be removed by the use of tools. This part of ISO 14122 specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (such as fixed ladders) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine. Where no local regulation or standards exists, this part of ISO 14122 may be used also for means of access which are outside the scope of the standard. It is intended that this part of ISO 14122 be used with ISO 14122-1 to give the requirements for fixed ladder systems. The ISO 14122 series as a whole is applicable to both stationary and mobile machinery where fixed means of access are necessary. It is not applicable to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators, or other devices specially designed to lift persons between two levels. This part of ISO 14122 is not applicable to machinery manufactured before the date of its publication. This standard contains the German version of EN ISO 14122-4:2016 which has been prepared by ISO/TC 199 "Safety of machinery", in collaboration with CEN/TC 114 "Safety of machinery" of the European Committee of Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN ISO 14122-4:2010-12 as follows: a) the standard has been revised in form and substance. The significant technical changes compared with the previous edition are summarized in tabular form in Annex C (informative); b) information for designers of fixed ladders is given in National Annex NA. The national interests during the preparation of this standard were represented by Committee NA 060-48-11 AA "Arbeitsbühnen und Zugänge - Sicherheit" ("Working platforms and means of access - Safety") of Technical section "Basic standards" of the Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of ladders, stairs, stepladders and guard rails, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations were involved in the preparation of the standard.
