This standard specifies the most important design and metrological characteristics of instruments intended for linear dimensional measurements (height measurements) and scribing. These instruments are usually used in conjunction with a reference plane (for example, surface plate). The linear dimensional measurements are made with regard to the reference plane. Instruments with a higher mass are provided with aerostatic bearings. The standard is a concept standard for instruments. The defined metrological characteristics serve as the basis for calculation of measurement uncertainty when using an instrument. During the meeting of ISO/TC 213/WG 6 in San Diego (USA) on January 12, 1997 it has been agreed that all future GPS standards shall be prepared as concept standards. The numerical values of the limit values for metrological characteristics shall not be part of the standards, but shall be indicated by the manufacturer. This decision results from the fact that over many years of work in the former ISO/TC 3/WG 11 it has not been possible to agree on limit values for measurement deviations of the "classical" instruments. This version of the standard is therefore in compliance with this decision. The International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 213/WG 6 "General requirements for geometrical product specification (GPS) measuring equipment". Subcommittee NA 152-03-02-07 UA "Eindimensionale Längenprüftechnik" ("One-dimensional metrology") is responsible for the German standard.
