As toll systems are widespread in Europe, provisions shall be taken for users of vehicles that are circulating through many different toll domains. Users should be offered a single contract for driving a vehicle through various toll domains. Where those vehicles require a form of on-board equipment (OBE) this shall be interoperable with the toll systems in the various toll domains. In Europe, legislation on interoperability has already been adopted, see Directive 2004/52. This International Standard identifies and specifies, in accordance with the generic requirements defined in ISO 17573, messages necessary for the exchange between toll service providers and toll collectors. To specify these interfaces, this standard uses corresponding information from the enterprise regarding the toll environment and interactions thereof.
