This document has been prepared by CEN/TC 172 "Pulp, paper and board". The secretariat is held by the Paper, Board and Pulp Standards Committee (NPa) at DIN. WG 8 "Test methods for soft tissue papers", which is held under German chairmanship, is the decision-making committee within CEN/TC 172. Representatives of the Paper, Board and Pulp Standards Committee have contributed to the preparation of this document. The responsible national Mirror Committee is NA 074-02-05 AA "Prüfverfahren für Tissue-Papier und Tissue-Produkte" ("Test methods for tissue paper and tissue products"). Thickness is an important property of tissue paper and tissue products. In the tissue industry, thickness-related parameters, such as the roll diameter of rolled products (kitchen towel) or the stack height of folded products (paper towels) are often measured. However, not only end-use tissue products, but also the base tissue paper from which these products are made, are subject to measurements. These are the subject of trade between companies on one side and countries on the other. Consequently, there is a genuine need for consistent thickness measurements which are applicable to tissue products at any stage of the manufacturing process including the end-use tissue products. The measurement of the thickness of tissue papers and tissue products is highly dependent on the pressure applied to the material at the time of measurement. Hitherto, several different loading pressures, pressure-foot diameters and loading severities have been used within the tissue industry. This part of the standard has been prepared to harmonise the various standards currently applied to tissue paper and tissue products. This part of the standard therefore specifies a single loading pressure, foot diameter and loading speed to be used for all thickness measurements of tissue paper and tissue products.
