This document has been prepared by CEN/TC 172 "Pulp, paper and board". The secretariat is held by the Standards Committee "Paper, board and pulps" (NPa) at DIN. The deciding committee within CEN/TC 172 is WG 8 "Specification for test methods for soft tissue papers" chaired by Germany. This document has been prepared under collaboration of representatives of the standard committees "Paper, board and pulps". National Mirror Committee is NA 074-02-05 AA "Prüfverfahren für Tissue-Papier und Tissue-Produkte" ("Test methods for tissue paper and tissue products"). Thickness is an important property of tissue paper and tissue products. In the tissue industry, thickness-related parameters, such as the roll diameter of rolled products (kitchen towel) or the stack height of folded products (paper towels) are often measured. However, not only end-use tissue products, but also the base tissue paper from which these products are made, are measured. These are the subject of trade between companies on the one hand and between countries on the other hand. Consequently, there is a need for a consistent measurement of thickness that can be applied at any stage of manufacture right up to the finished tissue product. The measurement of the thickness of tissue paper and tissue products is heavily dependent on the pressure applied to the material at the time of measurement. Several different loading pressures, pressure-foot diameters and loading speeds have been used within the tissue industry. This part of the standard has been prepared to harmonize those standards applicable to tissue paper and tissue products currently in use. Therefore, this part of the standard specifies a single loading pressure, consistent pressure-foot diameters and a unitary loading speed to be used for all thickness measurements of tissue and tissue products.
