This International Standard specifies performance requirements for protective clothing designed to protect the body (excluding the hands) of persons against heat and/or flame. This can be both protective suits and garment combinations. For the protection of head and feet, only gaiters, overshoes and hoods are included in the scope of this document. However, with regard to hoods, requirements for visors and respiratory equipment are not given. The performance requirements set out in this International Standard are applicable to protective clothing which could be worn for a wide range of end uses, where there is a need for clothing with limited flame spread properties and where the user can be exposed to radiant or convective or contact heat or to molten metal splashes. The scope of this document covers protective clothing made of flexible materials such as woven textiles, leather or textiles with metallized coatings. This International Standard does not apply to protective clothing specified in other International Standards, such as for fire-fighting in buildings or for welding and allied processes. Possible users are testing institutes, certification bodies and manufacturers. This document has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 "Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets", the secretariat of which is held by DIN, in collaboration with Technical Committee ISO/TC 94 "Personal safety - Protective clothing and equipment". The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 075-05-02 AA "Schutzkleidung gegen Hitze und Feuer" ("Protective clothing against heat and fire") at DIN Standards Committee Personal Protective Equipment (NPS). This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide a means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 89/686/EEC Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
This document replaces DIN EN ISO 11612:2009-05 .
