This standard is applicable to railings for decks and in gangways on inland navigation vessels for the protection of persons against falling overboard and from one deck to another. According to EU Directive 2006/87/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 December 2006 laying down technical requirements for inland waterway vessels and repealing Council Directive 82/714/EEC 1, inland waterway vessels shall be equipped with guardrails. This standard specifies relevant requirements of the aforementioned directive for guardrails for inland navigation vessels. It specifies types of construction, dimensions, strength requirements and test conditions that shall be complied with for safety reasons. This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 15 "Inland navigation vessels", the secretariat of which is held by DIN (Germany). The responsible German committee is Working Committee NA 132-07-01 AA "FA Binnenschifffahrt, Wasserfahrzeuge, Hafenanlagen (BWH) and NA 132-07 FB" ("Inland navigation, inland vessels, port facilities and Steering Committee of Section Inland Navigation Vessels") of DIN Standards Committee Shipbuilding and Marine Technology (NSMT) is responsible for this standard.
