The integration of production, control and EDP systems is always in important issue for companies, irrespective of their size or area of activity, in order to improve the competitiveness on the market. What is it about? In simple terms, the continuous exchange of the content of information shall be carried out correctly, completely and promptly without delay between the enterprise functions like production, planning, materials management, staff, the control systems and the EDP systems, a well-known problem which has only partially been solved, however. The series of standards DIN EN 62264 is aimed at enabling the continuous exchange of information within the company and improving the integration irrespective of the level of automation. It influences the tasks of most production-related business sectors. Enterprises operating worldwide are strongly interested in it because thus different EDP methods are standardized and combined which sustainably leads to robust, easy-care integration solutions. The significant advantages for the user are: shorter initial phase of the introduction of new products, improved tools for integration, lower automation costs, better possibilities of defining user requirements, optimization of the Supply Chain, etcetera. The standard is therefore important both for manufacturers and users and system integrators. DIN EN 62264 provides a consistent terminology for enterprise EDP systems and control systems and a number of concepts and models for the integration of enterprise functions. The technical solution is defined by the uniform modelling of the interfaces between the enterprise functions and the control functions. Main concepts are object modelling and the modelling languages UML and XML. Part 2 describes the specific attributes that is the data content of the objects identified in Part 1. Part 2 is intended to provide the basis for specific implementations of the object and data models of the information to be exchanged between level 3 and level 4. The standard does not include the task of the implementation itself (for instance, in XML); this can be carried out independently (for instance, by using schema B2MML which has been specified by WBF). The responsible body is DKE/K 931 "Systemaspekte" ("System aspects") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
