For the wired (conductive) charging of electric vehicles, accessories that fulfil a variety of requirements are required. This Part 2 of the standard IEC 62196 describes requirements for dedicated accessories in accordance with the charging modes 1 to 3 for a.c. charging described in the standard IEC 61851-1. Based on Part 1 of IEC 62196, "General requirements", this Part 2 "Dimensional compatibility and interchangeability requirements for a.c. pin and contact-tube accessories" specifies the geometric characteristics of the accessories. In the standard sheets of this standard three different principal dimensions (pin arrangements) for types 1 to 3 are described. Depending on type, the specifications pertain to both the infrastructure side with socket-outlet and plug and the vehicle side with vehicle connectors and vehicle inlets. Consequently, this standard provides important principles for specification of an interoperable wired charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 542.4 "Industriesteckvorrichtungen" ("Industrial accessories") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
