For the wired (conductive) charging of electric vehicles, accessories that fulfil a variety of requirements are required. Part 2 of the IEC 62196 standard describes requirements for dedicated accessories in accordance with the charging modes 1 to 3 described in standard IEC 61851-2 for charging with a.c. current. Building on IEC 62196 Part 1 "General requirements", Part 2 "Dimensional compatibility and interchangeability requirements for a.c. pin and contact-tube accessories" specifies the geometric characteristics of accessories. These common modifications to the DIN EN 62196-2 (VDE 0623-5-2) standard describe modified European requirements with respect to IEC 62196-2 for dedicated accessories in accordance with the charging modes 1 to 3 described in standard IEC 61851-1 for charging with a.c. currents. In this manner, the standard makes available important foundations for specification of an interoperable wired charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Europe. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 542.4 "Industriesteckvorrichtungen" ("Industrial accessories") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
