Overview

This Part 1 of the standard IEC 62196 describes requirements for dedicated accessories in accordance with the modes 1 to 4 charging described in standard IEC 61851-1 for charging with a.c. and d.c. currents. The aspects covered by Part 1 "General requirements" cover the characteristics and operating conditions of the accessories, for example, regarding touch protection, preferred ratings for current and voltage as well as requirements for contacts for signal or control purposes. Other requirements concern test specifications. The specifications concern both the infrastructure side with socket-outlets and plugs as well the vehicle side with vehicle connectors and vehicle inlets. Thus, this standard provides an important basis for the specification of an interoperable cabled charging infrastructure for electric road vehicles. Part 1 is supplemented by the (future) Parts 2 and 3, containing specifications for the main dimensions for interchangeability for pin and contact-tube accessories for charging with d.c. or a.c. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 542.4 "Industriesteckvorrichtungen" ("Industrial plugs and sockets") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
