For the wired (conductive) charging of electric vehicles, accessories that fulfil a variety of requirements are required. These common modifications to the DIN EN 62196-1 (VDE 0623-5-1) standard describe modified European requirements with respect to IEC 62196-1 for dedicated accessories in accordance with the charging modes 1 to 4 described in standard IEC 61851-1 for charging with a.c. and d.c. currents. The aspects covered by Part 1 "General requirements" cover the characteristics and operating conditions of the accessories, for example, regarding touch protection, preferred ratings for current and voltage as well as requirements for contacts for signal or control purposes. Other requirements concern test specifications. The specifications concern both the infrastructure side with socket-outlets and plugs as well the vehicle side with vehicle connectors and vehicle inlets. Thus, this standard provides an important basis for the specification of an interoperable cabled charging infrastructure for electric road vehicles. Part 1 is supplemented by the Part 2 and the future Part 3, containing specifications for the main dimensions for interchangeability for pin and contact-tube accessories for charging with d.c. or a.c. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 542.4 "Industriesteckvorrichtungen" ("Industrial accessories") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
