This standard contains the requirements for random vibration and shock tests of pneumatic, electrical and electronic equipment and components (hereinafter only referred to as equipment) which are incorporated into rolling stock. The random vibration test is the only method used for approval of equipment/components. The tests of this standard refer specifically to verification of the ability of the equipment to be tested to withstand the states of vibration of the environment, which are usually expected for rolling stock. In order to achieve the best possible results, the values given in this standard were derived from real in-service tests which have been transmitted from various railway companies worldwide. This standard excludes self-induced vibrations as they are specific for the respective application. Technical judgement and experience are necessary for application and interpretation of this standard. This standard is suitable for construction and validation purposes, it does not exclude the application of other development tools (such as a sinusoidal excitation), however, which assures a predetermined level of mechanical and operational reliability. The test levels applicable for the equipment to be tested are only determined by its location in the rail vehicle (that means, mounted on the wheelset, bogie or vehicle body). It should be noted that these tests may be carried out on prototypes in order to achieve construction-related information on the performance at random vibrations. For certification purposes, the tests shall be carried out on equipment however, which have been taken from normal production. The responsible national Working Committee is AK 351.0.5 "Isolationskoordination und Umgebungsbedingungen" ("Insulation coordination") at Subcommittee UK 351.1 "Fahrzeuge" ("Rolling stock") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
