Overview

A list of all parts of the international series of standards IEC 61010 under the general title "Safety Requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use" can be found on the IEC website. The present part IEC 61010-2-012 "Particular requirements for climatic and environmental testing and other temperature conditioning equipment" shall be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 61010-1. This standard has been prepared on the basis of the third edition (2010) of IEC 61010-1. IEC 61010-2-012 supplements or amends the corresponding clauses of IEC 61010-1, thereby converting this standard into IEC 61010-2-012 "Particular requirements for climatic and environmental testing and other temperature conditioning equipment". If a specific clause or subclause of Part 1 is not mentioned in this Part, that clause or subclause applies where applicable. Where "Add", "Amend", "Replace" or "Delete" is specified in this Part, the correspondingly adapted text of Part 1 of the standard shall apply. In this standard 1) the following typefaces are used: - requirements: in roman typeface, - NOTES: in small typeface, - conformity and tests: in italic typeface, - terms and definitions used throughout this standard and defined in clause are defined in Clause 3: in small capitals. 2) clauses, figures, tables and notes that are included in addition to those in Part 1 are numbered 101, 102 and so on. Additional annexes are numbered starting with AA. This Part 2-12 of the IEC 61010 international series of standards, "Safety Requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use", specifies safety requirements for electrical equipment and any accessories in categories a) to c), wherever they are to be used, and if they have one or more of the following characteristics: A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM controlled or affected by an integrated heating function such that the combination of heating and refrigeration systems can produce additional and/or more severe HAZARDS when compared to the individually considered systems. - The materials being treated in the intended application add significant heat to the REFRIGERATION SYSTEM, causing additional and/or more severe HAZARDS from the REFRIGERATION SYSTEM than would exist at the maximum DESIGN ambient temperature from the REFRIGERATION SYSTEM alone. - An irradiation function of the materials being treated causes additional HAZARD. - A function that exposes the treated materials to excessive moisture, carbon dioxide, salt spray, or other substances that may create additional HAZARDS. - A function of MECHANICAL MOVEMENT that creates additional HAZARDS. - Provisions allowing the USER to enter the operating area in order to load or unload the materials being processed. This generic standard is intended to be the safety standard for the equipment listed in its scope. However, in line with the principles set out in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51, it shall also be used by standards committees when preparing publications for such equipment similar to those in the present scope of application. This standard, IEC 61010-2-012, together with Part 2-010 and Part 2-011, relates to the specific HAZARDS associated with the heating or cooling of materials by equipment. The individual standards are categorized as follows: - IEC 61010-2-010: specifically addresses the HAZARDS associated with equipment with heating devices. - IEC 61010-2-011: specifically addresses the HAZARDS associated with equipment with REFRIGERATION devices. IEC 61010-2-012: specifically addresses the HAZARDS associated with equipment that includes both heating equipment and REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT, and which interact with each other such that there is an additional or increased HAZARD for the two pieces of equipment when considered together than when the individual pieces of equipment are considered separately. The standard also refers to the HAZARDS that may arise from the treatment of materials with other factors such as radiation, excessive moisture, Co2 and MECHANICAL MOVEMENT and so on. If the device contains only a facility for heating material and there is no REFRIGERATION SYSTEM, or if other environmental factors apply, then Part 2-10 applies without the need to apply Part 2-11 or Part 2-12. However, if a REFRIGERATION SYSTEM is operating in addition to a heating system and the materials in the system add significant heat to the system during the treatment in that particular appliance, then it shall be determined whether the interaction between the two systems creates additional or greater HAZARDS with respect to the individual performance of the systems (see Selection Process Flow Chart). If the interaction between the heating and cooling device does not cause any additional or greater HAZARD, then Parts 2-10 and 2-11 apply to their respective functions. However, if, conversely, additional or greater hazards are caused, then only Part 2-12 and neither Part 2-10 nor Part 2-11 apply. The responsible committee is DKE/K 913 "Sicherheitsanforderungen an typische Geräte, Einrichtungen und Systeme für Labor und Unterricht" ("Safety requirements for typical apparatus, equipment and systems for laboratory and teaching purposes") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
