Overview

This part of the DIN EN 60794 series specifies requirements for the geometrical, material, mechanical and environmental properties of optical fibre cable elements by the specification of suitable test methods. Consequently it replaces the clauses of DIN EN 60794-1-2:2004 dealing with the following tests: - the bend test for cable elements (method G1) serves for characterization of cable elements for splicing purposes by determining the attenuation increase of an optical element (fibre, ribbon, etcetera) when bent within a splice closure or similar device. - The purpose of the visual method for ribbon dimensions and geometry (method G2) is to monitor the height, width and fibre alignment parameters during the manufacturing process. - Checking the ribbon dimensions by using the aperture gauge (method G3) shall ensure that the ribbon's end can be inserted into the guiding slots of a commercially available stripping tool, and thus the ribbon can be aligned properly. - Method G5 serves to ensure sufficient tear resistance if the ribbon fibres are not intended to be separated or to ensure sufficient separability of ribbon fibres if the fibres are intended to be separated. The aim of this method is to verify separability by hand without damage. - The purpose of the ribbon torsion test (method G6) is to verify mechanical and functional integrity of the optical fibre ribbon's structure. The test determines the ribbon's ability to withstand torsion without splitting while maintaining fibre separability, where required. The tube kinking test (method G7) serves to verify the ability of tubes containing optical fibres to withstand mechanical stress The dial gauge test (method G4) which also serves to determine a ribbon's dimensions has not been adopted into DIN EN 60793-1-23. The ribbon residual twist test (method G8) which assesses the degree of permanent torsion of an optical fibre ribbon in a cable is new. This International Standard applies to optical fibre cables in telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to cables comprising a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenleiterkabel" ("Fibres and cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
