This International Standard has been prepared by IEC SC 62C "Equipment for radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and radiation dosimetry". This standard specifies the requirements regarding the performance characteristics of dosimeters used in radiotherapy for the measurement of the absorbed dose (rate) to water and the air kerma (rate) in photone, electrone, protone or heavy-ion radiation fields. This standard is applicable to the following classes of dosimeters: 1. Field-class dosimeter, usually used for measuring the kerma or dose in the radiation field either in air or in the phantom, in vivo measurement on patients at the skin surface dose or intracavitary measurement. 2. Reference-class dosimeter, usually used for calibrating field-class dosimeters. 3. Scanning-class dosimeter, usually used for measuring the relative dose distributions in connection with a scanning system such as an automatic water phantom. This standard covers neither the dose monitoring systems of radiotherapy treatment equipment nor the well-type ionization chambers used for calibrating radiation sources in brachytherapy. This standard does not deal with the safety aspects of dosimeters. The relevance of IEC safety standards depends on the way dosimeters are used: - if used in the patient environment, the safety requirements for dosimeters with ionization chambers for radiotherapy applications are given in DIN EN 60601-1 (VDE 0750-1); - if not used in the patient environment, the safety requirements for dosimeters with ionization chambers for radiotherapy applications are given in DIN EN 61010-1(VDE 0411-1). The committee responsible for this standard is Working Committee NA 080-00-11 GA "Dosimetrie" ("Dosimetry") of the Radiology Standards Committee.
