This fifth edition supersedes the fourth IEC edition of 2010. Amendments are listed below the summary of scopes. In general, this International Standard applies to automatic electrical controls for use in, on, or in association with equipment for household and similar use, including controls for heating, air-conditioning and similar applications, with respect to safety aspects of operating values, times, and sequences, and for the testing of automatic electrical control equipment used on or in conjunction with household or similar equipment. The equipment may use electricity, gas, oil, solid fuels, thermal solar energy, etcetera, or a combination thereof. The relevant rated voltage ranges are limited to AC 690 V or DC 600 V and a rated current of 63 A. More specifically, the formulated requirements are based on the following application areas: - regulation and control equipment for equipment falling within the scope of IEC 60335-1; - controls for building automation systems falling within the scope of ISO 16484; - special regulation and control equipment used as part of a control system or regulation and control equipment mechanically connected to multifunctional regulation and control equipment having a non-electrical output; - automatic electrical regulating and control devices for equipment not intended for normal domestic use but which may nevertheless be used by the public, such as equipment intended for use by lay persons in stores, trade and agriculture; - relays, when used as controls in IEC 60335 equipment, with additional requirements for safety and operating values (Annex U); - automatic electrical controls which are operated mechanically or electrically and which respond to or control quantities such as temperature, pressure, duration, humidity, light, electrostatic effects, flow, liquid level, current, voltage or acceleration, or combinations thereof; - starting relays which are provided as a special version of automatic electrical controls to switch the starting winding of motors; such controls may be incorporated in or separate from the motor; - manually operated controls when they form a unit electrically and/or mechanically with automatic controls. This standard is based on the fifth edition of IEC 60730-1; it supersedes the fourth edition of 2010 and introduces the following main technical changes with respect to the previous version: - modification of the title and scope; - revisions to Clause H.26 based on changes in technology, applications, and to improve consistency and layout; - modification to Table H.12 to align with CISPR 22; - revisions to Annex J to correlate the fault modes of thermistors and to exempt thermistors used in conjunction with type 1 controls in SELV low power circuits from the tests specified in Annex J; - new requirements covering battery-powered controls, and the use of batteries in controls; - revision addressing the exclusion of relay faults; - new/updated requirements in Clause 24, for switch mode power supplies; - revisions covering the allowance of screwless-type clamping units complying with IEC 60999-1; - new requirements addressing remotely actuated control functions; - addition of a new/updated leakage current diagram to align the Annex E diagram with the diagram in IEC 60990 and updated requirements for temperature sensing controls. The responsible committee is DKE/K 515 "Regel- und Steuergeräte" ("Controls") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
